2-Day Skills Sustainment Exercise

How This Exercise Assists Your AHIMT in Maintaining Readiness

Once a particular ICS (Incident Command System) qualification is attained, unless AHIMT members have opportunities to deploy on a regular basis, there is a potential that the skills they worked so hard to attain will begin to degrade and may even be lost. The U.S. Fire Administration (USFA) recognizes the issue of AHIMT skill degradation and is developing several tools to assist AHIMTs in maintaining their skills, teamwork, enthusiasm, and capabilities. This two-day Skills Sustainment Exercise (SSE) is one of those tools.

This exercise is designed to provide a review of the entire planning process, from incident notification through development and distribution of an Incident Action Plan during the initial stages of an incident. This review provides a critical refresher of the actions and activities necessary to be successful during the initial stages of a deployment. Created for members of the command and general staff of a Type-3 incident management team, the exercise is designed to last two days.

  • Day One contains a mixture of lecture, interactive discussions, and appropriate tabletop exercises to provide a comprehensive review of the entire planning process.
  • Day Two consists of a comprehensive functional exercise designed to challenge individual team members by providing a scenario in which they must function properly in their ICS Command or General Staff role on the team. A short After-Action Review period provides appropriate feedback to the team, enabling them to incorporate suggestions that will maintain their teams’ effectiveness.
